Audio Showcase II – Fall 2017

Audio Showcase II

Fall 2017

The (other) Three introduced new drummer Peter Hoesing to Audiences performing more Chris Champion’s original tunes this time.  Possible choices to have new band name like The four (or 3.14159…) with Sandy Champion and to have various and experimental forms could make audiences excited.

I hope you enjoy their post-production outcomes from DAD 350 Recording Sessions classmates.  Individuals portrait different aspects and viewpoints, so there were no supervision and direction to present specific taste and sound.

DSU Live 2016 – The Three Concert

Trio concert Monday to kick off new season of DSU Live

THREE IN CONCERT — Local musicians Peter Kim (left), Sandra Champion, and Chris Champion together make “3 in Concert.” They will perform on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Tunheim Classroom Building auditorium. The concert is a kick-off for a new season of DSU Live.

It’s time for a revival of sorts at Dakota State University, a revival of live musical performances with DSU Live.

The live shows at DSU have been downplayed in recent history, said Peter Kim, assistant professor of audio productions.

He is also in charge of the DSU Live program and hopes to start this year’s performances off strong with a jazz/pop trio show called “3 in Concert.”

This kick-off event is scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Tunheim Classroom Building Auditorium on the DSU campus. Happy hour snacks will be served beginning at 5 p.m.

DSU director of music programs Sandra Champion provides vocals and plays the flute; local musician Chris Champion is on guitar and vocals; Kim plays bass.

The musicians like a variety of styles. Kim likes fusion jazz and funk.

Chris Champion said, “I do a little bit of everything,” giving an example from his standard Thursday night gig at Carnaval Brazilian Grill in Sioux Falls. “I play a little James Taylor, a little ZZ Top. I do whatever I feel like.”

What the trio feels like doing with this concert is reviving the DSU Live program to increase interest and promote the program, said Kim.

They will kick-start the season with the faculty trio and hopefully make it bigger and bigger other performances, he said.

The next planned concert is on Dec. 1 in the TC Underground. Three rock bands will be playing, including Wolf Skin.

DSU Live hosts folks band Condor (2015)

DSU Live, in collaboration with the Madison Area Arts Council, was excited to invite the Sioux Falls band Condor to perform a concert on the DSU Campus. Condor is unique in that they are a three-piece group with banjo, acoustic guitar, and cello. The band performed an extended set with a variety of original songs, and even threw in a surprising cello piece on Bach while a broken acoustic string was being replaced!

As is a traditional part of the concert series, we also recorded the audio of the show and will be sending it to SDPB radio to be broadcast on the show, “No Cover, No Minimum”. There was also student artwork on display from Cassie’s Design 2: Color class. The concert was a lot of fun, both in terms of listening, and practicing recording techniques. Here is a video of one of the songs, “Sunshine Wine”, with the mixed audio:

“Condor” to perform at DSU! (2015)

Condor is an outstanding folk trio from Sioux Falls, featuring cello, guitar, and banjo. They will be visiting DSU on Saturday, February 21st at 7:30pm for an intimate concert.

DSU Live and the Madison Area Arts Council are very excited to add another talented band to their series that has been running over the past several years. There are plans for Audio Production students to record the concert for potential airplay on South Dakota Public Broadcasting Radio. It looks to be a fantastic event!
